Parent Educator – Parent as Teachers

Neighbors Link provides innovative and impact driven programming to immigrant families and works to empower clients to successfully navigate community resources and to foster client leadership.

Job Summary: The Neighbors Link Family Center grounds its programming in the philosophy that parents are a child’s first teacher. We offer evidenced-informed programming in parent education, school readiness, after-school and summer academic support, and healthy family relationships. Neighbors Link is looking for a full-time, compassionate, patient and flexible Parent Educator to provide one-on-one parent education, developmental information and family support to parents through personal home visits to promote the healthy development of children from pregnancy to kindergarten. Parent Educators utilize the nationally recognized and evidenced based home visiting Parents as TeachersTM model to deliver quality home-based early childhood education, developmentally age appropriate resources and effective child-parent interaction techniques. This position will report to the Family Center Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend training to become a Certified Parent Educator
  • Plan and conduct one-on-one home visits to families on assigned caseload of 25 families using the Parents as TeachersTM (PAT) curriculum, methods and materials
  • Provide early detection, conduct developmental screening services to children zero to five years of age and connect participating families to internal programs and community resources, as needed
  • Monitor client caseload and record child’s developmental progress
  • Acquire knowledge and expertise of the agency’s database software, Salesforce, to maintain accurate records of all personal home visits, contacts, screenings, resource linkages and data input of progress and required reports
  • Reflect the values and philosophy of Neighbors Link by creating a caring and nurturing environment based on mutual respect
  • Work with children and their parents with a culturally sensitive approach that allows room for creativity and an opportunity to “meet parents where they are”
  • Maintain client confidentiality and integrity in keeping with agency policies, practices, professional standards and program requirements
  • Participate in community outreach events as needed and required
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and supervision, biweekly staff meetings and attend assigned trainings and educational workshops
  • Support with other programs (e.g. Learning Links, Pipeline, PAT, Family Night, etc.) and/or special events (e.g. vaccination clinics, Family Health Day, Mercado de las Fiestas, etc.), as needed
  • This full-time position may require occasional evening and weekend hours, as needed.

  • Requirements:

  • Fluent English-Spanish bilingual is required, bicultural preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development, Child Psychology, Social Work or related field is preferred; or
  • Minimum of 60 college hours in Early Childhood Education or Child Development with a minimum of two years experience working directly with young children under the age of five required; or
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or five years experience in a pre-school setting preferred.
  • Required continuing education to maintain certification
  • Flexibility to work some weekends and/or evenings, as needed
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Must be able to travel to all of Neighbors Link locations in Mount Kisco, Ossining and Yonkers for outreach or special events, as needed.
  • Ability to provide a supportive, culturally sensitive, and caring environment for children and their families
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops

For the PAT Parent Educator position, the employee will be making home visits in person as long as local and CDC safety guidelines allow.
