THE CULTURE OF FILM
TUE., SEPT. 22, 2009, JACOB BURNS FILM CENTER, PLEASANTVILLE, NY
The film "La Americana" is an intimate documentary following an undocumented immigrant's journey from Bolivia to New York City and back, as she struggles to save the life of her ailing daughter. Her unforgettable story is woven into the current immigration crisis in the United States, putting a human face on this timely and controversial issue. A conversation with the film's director Nicholas Bruckman, and Carola Otero Bracco, Executive Director of Neighbors Link, will follow.
A reception featuring drinks and hors d'oeuvres will precede the film at 6:15pm. The screening at 7:15 pm will be followed by the discussion. Port, dessert and coffee will be served afterwards. Jacob Burns Film Center is located at 364 Manville Road in Pleasantville, NY.

"The Culture of Photography" will feature award-winning Chilean-born, New York-based writer and photographer Camilo José Vergara in conversation with noted author and historian, Columbia University Professor Dr. Kenneth T. Jackson.
Photojournalist Camilo Vergara has been called the "Jacob Riis" of our times because of his observations of the American landscape, especially of the American ghetto. His studies of "new immigrant ghettos, deriving their character from an influx of immigrants, mainly Latino and West Indian," include how immigrant groups have revitalized urban centers. Reception will include drinks and hors d'oeuvres, beginning at 6:30pm at the St. Matthew's Fellowship Hall, 382 Cantitoe Street, Bedford, NY.

Continuing the event series on Friday, October 23 at 7:00pm, will be a Wine Tasting and Latin Rhythm Concert featuring noted musician Norberto Goldberg and his band AMAZON, including tapas and Latin American wines courtesy of Mt. Kisco Wines and Spirits.
Born in Argentina, drummer/percussionist Norberto Goldberg is a versatile musician equally comfortable in a club playing Brazilian jazz or performing in a symphonic concert hall. His career highlights include performing with jazz artists Cleo Laine and Slide Hampton, with stage legends Chita Rivera and Tommy Tune, in Broadway shows Once on this Island and Grease, and on recordings with Gerry Mulligan and Grover Washington, Jr. His group AMAZON is comprised of world-class musicians with extensive recording and touring credits in Latin and Brazilian jazz. The Bedford Campus of the Rippowam Cisqua School is located at 439 Cantitoe Street, Bedford, NY.
