Hiring
Workers at Neighbors LInk
The Neighbors Link Worker Center (Hiring Site) is open every morning at 7:00 AM, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Here, you can hire skilled or unskilled workers for daily, seasonal or permanent employment. As a referral service, we do not accept fees or ask questions. The goal of the Worker Center is to help facilitate productive work experiences for employers and employees alike. Neighbors Link helps facilitate 6,000 jobs annually. Important Note: Every job requires different skills and abilities. It is always the employer's responsibility to ascertain the qualifications and experience of prospective employees as Neighbors Link does not test their skills. As a non-profit agency, Neighbors Link does not carry insurance for the workers who use Neighbors Link, does not make any guarantees about the quality of their work, nor does it hold any responsibility for any of the actions or inaction of these workers. Neighbors Link makes a physical meeting place and translators available to help make communication more comfortable between employers and prospective employees. What's the drill? The Worker Center is managed
by a former day worker, Santos Buezo. He or Gustavo Delgado will meet
you at the door and listen to your needs. If you're seeking skilled workers
with experience, we encourage you to select the person who seems right
for the job. Or, if your needs are for general (unskilled) labor, you
have the option of using the popular Job Lottery System created by the
workers themselves. When you draw a name, each worker has an equal chance
for the job. How long does it take to hire a worker? Less than 3 minutes. Some employers stay longer because they want to meet several workers. Others stay for coffee and observe the English Class or take a tour of the Center. How much are workers usually paid? We suggest paying unskilled workers in the range of $10 - $12 per hour. Also, we suggest providing lunch if you're hiring someone for only a day or even a few days. Specialty or Skilled workers earn more, depending on the level of experience or knowledge required, or language ability. Negotiations are between the employer and the employee, but translators are available to make communication more comfortable. Housekeepers are available to clean homes and offices. To inquire about housekeepers listed in our database, please call 914-666-3410 and leave a message for Luisa at ext.100. Your call will be returned so you can discuss your needs and situation. Tailors and Seamstresses are often available at Neighbors Link. Many participants in our Latin Sol Workshop have experience in clothing repair and alterations. These include a Guatemalan tailor with 15 years experience in the industry and seamstresses who learned basic sewing and alteration skills at Neighbors Link. To inquire, call 914-666-3410 and leave a message for Luisa at ext.100. Please note: Neighbors Link cannot check references of workers because every job requires different skills and abilities. It is always the employer's responsibility to ascertain the qualifications and experience of prospective employees. Translators are available to help make communication more comfortable. Workers need to be paid at the end of every day unless trustworthy arrangements have been made in advance. This is because a few employers "scam" workers. The term refers to the practice of hiring workers off the street, delaying compensation until tomorrow... but after several days or weeks, leaving the worker without pay. Why hire workers at Neighbors Link? Hiring people off the street is risky for employers and employees alike. Since the beginning, the dream of Neighbors Link has been to offer all people a chance to meet their human potential. That's why we emphasize education, employment and empowerment. To this end, the Worker Center provides shelter from the rain and cold, productive socialization, job training and skill enhancement, restrooms and refreshments, translators for job opportunities, and morning English classes during hiring site hours. These popular classes are 3 hours long, but teachers and students are glad to interrupt the class when homeowners and contractors stop by to offer a job. In fact, it's the best part of class! These are some of the reasons why workers who come to Neighbors Link are motivated to work and grow. Our belief is that both employers and employees prosper when the economic marketplace is based on mutual respect, hard work, and shared accomplishments. Neighbors Link does not accept fees from employers or employees. Our services are free of charge and made possible by contributions from caring people like you who believe in the work we do together. |
